This residential project involved the extensive renovation and extension of an existing detached bungalow in South Dublin. The clients wanted to make better use of the generous footprint of the existing house while creating additional living and bedroom accommodation through a series of carefully considered extensions and the expansion of the upper floor.
A key part of the architectural brief was to significantly increase the usable space within the property while retaining the overall character and proportions of a dormer bungalow. This allowed the redesigned home to respond to the scale and form of neighbouring properties while providing the additional accommodation required for contemporary family living.
At ground-floor level, a long rear extension was introduced to create a larger kitchen and dining area with an improved relationship to the rear garden. To the front of the house, a smaller extension provides a more generous and clearly defined entrance hall, improving both the arrival experience and the internal layout of the existing home.
At first-floor level, the roof was raised to create significantly improved living and bedroom accommodation within the upper storey. Carefully positioned dormer windows to the front and rear introduce additional natural daylight while increasing usable internal space and maintaining the overall dormer bungalow form.
The external materials were selected to create a contemporary architectural identity while allowing the renovated house to sit comfortably within its established South Dublin residential setting. Brick forms the predominant material across the main house and new extensions, complemented by areas of contrasting white render. Timber and black zinc detailing are introduced at dormer and ground-floor level, adding depth and variation to the overall composition.
The completed design transforms the existing bungalow into a larger contemporary family home while retaining the scale and character appropriate to its surroundings. Through a combination of rear and front extensions, increased upper-floor accommodation and carefully positioned dormers, the project demonstrates the potential of bungalow renovation and extension to provide substantial additional space without losing the identity of the original house.
