Explorium

LOCATION

DUBLIN

STATUS

COMPLETED

Explorium is Ireland’s first state-of-the-art interactive science and sports centre, located at the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. The project involved the extensive refurbishment and redevelopment of an existing 10,000 sq.m. health and fitness centre to create a major educational, science and leisure destination in Dublin.

The architectural brief called for the existing building to be completely reimagined as three distinct but interconnected visitor experiences, each with its own identity and function.

Science Centre
The main Science Centre contains more than 300 interactive exhibits and experiences, together with a theatre, gravity-defying rooms, interactive bicycles and a dedicated media and performance activity space.

Junior Science Centre
Designed specifically for younger visitors, the Junior Science Centre provides an educational and interactive environment incorporating more than 50 hands-on science experiences.

Sports Science Centre
The Sports Science Centre combines sport, technology and interactive entertainment, with facilities including climbing walls, cave exploration experiences, Formula 1 simulators, robot goalkeepers and virtual reality rooms.

Connecting the three principal areas are two reception spaces and a range of supporting visitor and staff facilities. These include a 550 sq.m. restaurant, cafés, a technology shop, meeting rooms and office accommodation.

The completed refurbishment transformed the existing building into a large-scale interactive science, education and sports facility, bringing together architecture, technology, learning and entertainment within a single destination.

Explorium has also provided the setting for RTÉ’s Future Island, showcasing science, technology and innovation in Ireland.
