DUBLIN
Set within the dramatic landscape of the Dublin Mountains, this contemporary private family home was designed to respond carefully to a steeply sloping site while maximising panoramic views across Dublin and the surrounding landscape.
The site falls significantly from an elevated access road towards the garden below, presenting a challenging topography for the design of a new house. From the outset, the architectural approach was to work with the natural contours of the land, creating a home that steps down through the site rather than dominating the hillside.
The clients' brief called for a contemporary family home with generous bedroom accommodation, a dedicated home office, private gym and a strong connection between the internal living spaces and the extensive garden. A sheltered carport was also incorporated into the design, providing practical protection at the main entrance from Ireland's changeable weather.
From the road, the house presents as a modest single-storey monopitch dwelling, maintaining a low profile and minimising its visual impact on the surrounding Dublin Mountains landscape. Beyond the entrance, however, the house develops into a split-level arrangement that follows the natural fall of the site and opens towards the expansive views beyond.
At entrance level, the principal bedroom suite occupies an elevated position, taking advantage of panoramic views across the surrounding landscape while providing a private retreat from the main family living areas.
At the lower garden level, the principal living spaces, additional bedrooms, home office and gym connect directly with a generous external terrace and the garden beyond. Large areas of glazing maximise natural daylight and views while creating a strong relationship between the interior spaces, garden and surrounding landscape.
The split-level design allows the new house to make efficient use of a challenging sloping site while creating distinct relationships with the landscape at each level. The result is a contemporary, site-responsive family home that combines privacy, natural light and generous living accommodation while remaining carefully integrated into its Dublin Mountains setting.
